The attack on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, and the crash of a plane in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killed approximately 3,000 people.
Farhan Haq also paid tribute to the survivors of the tragedy and the first responders who risked their lives during the rescue operations. These professionals worked in the ruins of the buildings for hours and days after the attacks.
The UN spokesperson described the attacks as "an attack against humanity itself," emphasizing the global impact of the event. The anniversary ceremonies of the attacks are traditionally marked by moments of silence and reading of the victims' names around the world.
