The world map that is frequently used can convey an incorrect perception of the actual dimensions of countries and continents. This distortion is due to the Mercator projection, which is the most common and widely used cartographic representation. The Mercator projection was developed in the 16th century and, although useful for navigation, ends up exaggerating the size of lands located at higher latitudes.
The Equal Earth projection emerges as an alternative that seeks to correct these distortions. This cartographic representation was developed with the objective of showing the areas of the Earth's surface in the correct proportions, thus offering a more faithful image of the true dimension of world territories.
Compared to the Mercator map, the Equal Earth projection presents continents and countries with dimensions more proportional to reality. This means that countries like Greenland, Russia and the European continent appear proportionally smaller than in the Mercator projection, while Africa and South America appear larger.
