The new 2026/2027 school year began in Penafiel on September 9th with approximately 8,800 students returning to the municipality's schools. The local authority held the traditional reception ceremony for teachers and educators from the pre-school education establishments and the Municipality of Penafiel.
During the start of the school year, several measures that will mark the new school year were presented. Among these is the progressive installation of air conditioning systems in the municipality's schools, an intervention aimed at improving the conditions of the spaces used daily by students and staff. Requalification works are also underway at the head schools of the Pinheiro, Paço de Sousa, and Penafiel Sudeste School Groups, in addition to maintenance work at ten educational establishments.
The local authority maintains support in the areas of school social action, meals, and school transport, as well as measures to support school operations and families. In the pedagogical area, initiatives such as the Municipal Multidisciplinary Team, PISA for Schools, Hypatiamat, vocational and career guidance programs, and the Gulbenkian Aprender Program are planned.
11th grade students will have access to Basic Life Support training, while programs such as Junior University, School Fruit, Holiday Garden, and Educational, Sports, and Inclusive Holidays are part of the initiatives aimed at the school community. Penafiel also maintains participation in the AppyBrain project, aimed at 3rd cycle students at the municipality's TEIP schools, in the subject of Mathematics.
