The Brasília Brazilian Cinema Festival opened its 59th edition this Friday (11) in the Federal District, with the screening of the film "A pele morta" and a tribute to actress Julia Lemmertz. The event is the oldest film festival in operation in the country.
The 2026 edition of the festival was threatened with cancellation. Last month, the organization announced that the event would not be held after a meeting with representatives of the DF Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, which communicated that the agency would not transfer the agreed amounts for the festival's realization.
After strong repercussions in the press and on social media, Governor Celina Leão (PP) backtracked and confirmed the festival's realization hours after the cancellation announcement. Before backtracking, Leão had stated that she would not prioritize the Brasília Festival in light of the budget crisis caused by a case not specified in the article.
