BE accuses Government of announcing "crumbs" already "swallowed" by new interest rate increase

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 18:46

The Left Bloc accused the Government of announcing measures it designated as "crumbs" that are already "swallowed" by the new interest rate increase. The criticism was made by José Manuel Pureza, who referred to the new supplement for pensioners and the IRS relief up to the sixth bracket as "a small alms".

According to Pureza, with the interest rate increase, the measures announced by the Executive end up being "less than nothing" for citizens. The leftist bloc member considered that the support measures are not sufficient to compensate for the negative impact of rising interest rates on people's lives.

The article states that the new supplement for pensioners and the tax relief are part of the set of measures presented by the Government to address the cost of living. However, the BE opposition believes that these measures are insufficient and that the interest rate increase cancels out any benefit they may bring. José Manuel Pureza emphasized that the so-called "crumbs" promised by the Executive are quickly absorbed by the worsening economic conditions.

New social welfare model in Higher Education: strengthen without excluding

The article analyzes the new Regulation for the Award of Scholarships to Higher Education Students approved by the Portuguese Government in May, which adjusts scholarship amounts to students' economic conditions and regional cost of living. The rector of the University of Aveiro warns that preliminary simulations at the institution indicate that around 20% of scholarship recipients analyzed (15 out of 72 cases) could no longer meet the conditions to receive a scholarship under the new rules. Although recognizing that the phased implementation until 2027/28 is positive, he argues that the reform requires a rigorous assessment of its effects, as the success of a social welfare policy is not measured only by the value of support, but also by the ability to ensure that no one is left behind.
