Sócrates denies connection to Paris apartment purchase and accuses MP of "falseness"

SIC Notícias10 September 2026 at 18:27

José Sócrates, former Portuguese prime minister, returned to the "Marquês" case trial and publicly addressed the question of purchasing an apartment in Paris. During his intervention, the defendant repeatedly denied any connection to the property: "I am not, and never was, the owner of any apartment in Paris," he stated.

Sócrates also directed serious accusations against the Public Ministry, referring to "falseness" on the part of the prosecutors. This is not the first time the former politician has contested the Public Ministry's conclusions in this case.

The apartment in Paris is connected to Carlos Santos Silva, a personal friend of Sócrates and also a defendant in the case. According to the prosecution, Santos Silva allegedly acted as a front man, purchasing the property in his own name but at Sócrates's behest.

The "Marquês" case involves multiple accusations against José Sócrates, including corruption, tax fraud, and money laundering. The trial has been closely followed, given the political profile of the main defendant and the complexity of the financial transactions involved.
