Fraudulent use of ECO's image persists

Eco10 September 2026 at 18:00

ECO reported in February a criminal complaint against unknown individuals to the DIAP for the dissemination of fake news on social media that simulated articles from the newspaper. So far, the authorities have not provided any update on this case, according to Paulo Padrão, CEO of Swipe News, owner of ECO.

New cases of fraudulent use of ECO's image and brand continue to appear. Given this situation, Swipe News/ECO has already added the respective evidence to the criminal complaint previously filed with the DIAP.

Before pursuing the legal route in February, ECO had alerted Meta, owner of Facebook, the platform where the fake news using the brand's image appears most frequently, without obtaining results. ECO has continued to report the improper content to the platform.

Some of the most recent cases of false content simulate news about Cristiano Ronaldo and António Costa, but also about the governor of the Bank of Portugal.
