Brussels opened a public consultation to gather contributions on adapting VAT rules to the circular economy. This consultation is part of the preparatory work for the future EU Circular Economy Law, which aims to modernise the European tax framework to favour more sustainable practices.
The initiative comes in the context of the transition to a more sustainable economic model, in which the reuse, repair and recycling of products play a central role. The European Commission intends to assess how the VAT system can be reformed to encourage these activities and reduce resource waste.
Interested parties can submit their contributions until 4 November 2026. This consultation aims to gather perspectives from various sectors, including businesses, environmental organisations and citizens, to support the future legislative proposals of the European Union in this area.
