European Commission reaches agreement with USA on border data exchange

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 16:36

The European Commission concluded negotiations with the United States on a framework agreement for border data exchange. The agreement was reached today and represents a milestone in bilateral relations between the EU and the USA in the area of security and migration management.

The agreement involves the European Commission as representative of the European Union and the United States as the counterpart. This is a bilateral agreement aimed at regulating the sharing of information related to border controls.

Following the conclusion of negotiations, the agreement must now follow the ordinary legislative procedure of the European Union. For it to enter into force, approval will be required from both the EU Council and the European Parliament.

This agreement comes in the context of greater international cooperation on border security and information exchange between allied countries. Its implementation will depend on the outcome of the votes in the European legislative bodies.
