PS to "assess" Chega's proposals to reduce fuel VAT. PSD fears "cross-voting"

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 16:00

PS announced it will "assess" the proposals presented by Chega to reduce VAT on fuels and eliminate VAT on the food basket. PS stated, however, that it will only take a position after knowing the details of the proposed measures.

PS made this statement through deputy Carlos Pereira, who spoke on RTP Antena 1. According to the parliamentarian, the party's position will be taken when the concrete details of the proposals are known: "It's a matter of assessing, we'll see what to do at the time."

PSD expressed concern regarding this situation, warning about the possibility of "cross-voting" occurring in parliament. This concern arises in the context of a potential rapprochement between PS and Chega in the voting of fiscal measures.

Chega's proposals include reducing VAT on fuels and the total elimination of VAT on the food basket, measures that have been debated in the Portuguese political scenario as possible responses to the cost of living.
