Aznar blames "the drama" of Ceuta on the "enmity" with "relevant allies" like Israel

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General10 September 2026 at 15:23

The former president of the Spanish Government, José María Aznar, linked the massive entry of immigrants in Ceuta to the fact that Spain has "alienated the friendship of relevant allies" like Israel. Aznar made these statements during the presentation of an informational breakfast with Dana Erlich, chargé d'affaires of the Israeli Embassy in Spain, organized by the Nova Economia Forum.

In his speech, Aznar stated that "Israel is the easternmost line of defense of the West" and defended that Spain must "recover as soon as possible a normalized relationship with Israel", considering that this country is a strategic ally for reasons of greater importance than "ideological prejudice" or "opportunistic advantage-seeking".

Dana Erlich expressed surprise that, in the middle of a "national emergency" context in Spain, Israel is being blamed instead of talking about the security of Ceuta. The diplomatic official noted that the focus returned to Israel when it should have been centered on the security of the Spanish city.

Dana Erlich also stated that for Israel there was never any doubt about who has control in Ceuta, expressing her surprise at how the topic was addressed during the migration crisis.
