Lisbon City Council condemned to pay more than 463 thousand euros in the "Russiagate" case

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 15:10

The Lisbon City Council was condemned to pay more than 463 thousand euros in the case known as "Russiagate". The Lisbon council was considered responsible for having disclosed personal data of Russian citizens who were opponents of Vladimir Putin's regime.

The case dates back to January 2021, when the city council made public the personal data of these Russian citizens. The disclosure of this information endangered the security of these people who opposed the Russian government.

The conviction represents a significant amount for the council and comes as a consequence of the serious failure in the protection of sensitive data of foreign citizens who were seeking protection in Portugal. The court considered that the council acted inappropriately by exposing information that should have been kept confidential.
