Mercadona opened its first store in the Vila Real district, representing an investment exceeding 9.5 million euros in construction. The commercial space, with 1,900 square meters of sales area, created 74 jobs with permanent contracts from day one. To mark the occasion, the mayor of Vila Real, Alexandre Favaios, and the president of the Parish Council of Vila Real, José Maria Magalhães, accompanied by members of their respective executives, made an institutional visit to the new facilities.
The supermarket has various departments, including a butcher's shop, fishmonger, deli, pastry shop and bakery, fruits and vegetables, perfumery, home care and pets, a wine cellar and ready-to-eat area with self-service. The space also has 180 parking spaces and 420 solar panels for photovoltaic energy production for self-consumption, allowing a reduction of approximately 20% in annual electricity consumption.
As part of its food waste prevention strategy, Mercadona established a collaboration protocol with Cáritas Diocesana de Vila Real, which provides for the daily delivery of products that are no longer suitable for sale, but which maintain all safe conditions for consumption.
