Work is no longer enough to escape poverty in Portugal. This is the main conclusion of the 20th edition of the Barometer on poverty and economic precariousness, conducted by the Secours Populaire Français organization. Portuguese families live under great financial pressure and increasingly rely on food aid to survive.
According to the study, three in every four Portuguese respondents point to low wages as the main cause of economic precariousness in the country. This situation reflects the difficulties many workers face in guaranteeing a decent income, even when employed.
The barometer also reveals that more than half of the Portuguese respondents fear they will not be able to meet their children's needs. This concern demonstrates the profound impact of poverty on families and the inability of many households to meet the basic needs of their members.
