Archaeologists find pre-Inca civilization burial site in Peru

cbn10 September 2026 at 12:38

Archaeologists in Peru announced the discovery of an almost intact pre-Inca burial site, containing the remains of 38 individuals. Among them is a member of the elite of the Chimú civilization, which flourished on the northern coast of Peru between 900 and 1470 AD, before being defeated by the Inca. The mud-brick structure measures 17 meters on each side and approximately five meters in height.

Inside, five chambers were found containing metal weapons and human remains. The main burial chamber remained sealed for almost 600 years until its discovery. This is the first time Peruvian archaeologists have found an intact funerary platform of a Chimú elite member.

Previous discoveries of Chimú burial sites consisted of looted and destroyed remains, which makes this find particularly significant for understanding this civilization that preceded the Inca Empire in the region.
