After acquiring UE Cornellà, Lionel Messi now has a preliminary agreement to also own CD Eldense, a club that competes in LaLiga 2, the second division of Spanish football. The Alicante club confirmed the existence of negotiations with the Argentine player and his family.
With this acquisition, CD Eldense will compete in the same division as Almería, a club owned by Cristiano Ronaldo. Thus, the two world stars, who for years were rivals in Spanish football serving Barcelona and Real Madrid, will now see their clubs regularly face each other in the Spanish Segunda División.
The operation raises legal questions, as Spanish legislation prohibits the same owner from holding two clubs in the same sporting competition. Spanish law establishes that a natural or legal person cannot have significant stakes in two clubs participating in the same professional league, which could make the complete acquisition of both clubs by Messi unfeasible.
