"There is no general program for the nationalization of REN"

Jornal de Negócios10 September 2026 at 12:18

The Ministry of Finance clarified that there is no general program for the nationalization of REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais), denying speculations about a possible full re-nationalization of the company. The government emphasized that the State's acquisition of 13.7% of REN's shares was a one-time operation and not part of a broader nationalization plan.

The purchase operation was carried out by the Portuguese State, which increased its stake in REN to 13.7%. This acquisition comes in the context of concerns about national energy security and the control of critical infrastructure.

The government indicated that the details relating to this operation will be made available to the public for review and scrutiny, but only after compliance with all applicable legal and market rules. This condition explains the absence of public details about the transaction to date.

REN is the entity responsible for managing energy networks in Portugal, including electricity and natural gas, being considered a strategic infrastructure for the country. The operation was interpreted by some analysts as a reinforcement of the State's role in the energy sector, although the government stressed that this is not a comprehensive nationalization.
