Dutch football icon abandons activities due to health risk: 'Possibility of fatal outcome'

oglobo10 September 2026 at 12:05

The Dutch football icon Marc Overmars announced that he would leave his position as sporting director of Royal Antwerp and interrupt all professional activities indefinitely. The 53-year-old former player made the decision public in a letter distributed by the Belgian club, after receiving medical warnings about the risks of maintaining his work routine.

Overmars had held the position since March 2022 and was in negotiations to renew his contract. According to himself, the accumulated stress and fatigue over the past years reached a critical limit over the weekend.

In the letter, Overmars stated: "Everyone knows that my health is not in the best condition. Now, I clearly feel that I can no longer bear this hectic and stressful professional life." He acknowledged the need to prioritize his own health, although he had intended to remain at the club until the end of the season and continue the work in the following years.
