Young and anxious women are the group that most seeks Line 1411, the suicide prevention hotline in Portugal. These women mainly present anxious and depressive symptomatology as the basis of their help requests.
In the first year of operation of the line, 25 thousand calls were registered. The main reasons for contact were related to family and relationship problems, which were identified as triggering factors of the psychological distress that led people to call.
The suicide prevention hotline had to activate the National Institute of Medical Emergency in only 2.5% of cases, which suggests that the majority of situations were possible to resolve through the monitoring and psychological support provided by the line itself.
