Lisbon City Hall condemned to pay 463 thousand euros in the Russiagate case

Euronews Portugal10 September 2026 at 11:11

The Lisbon City Council was condemned to pay 463 thousand euros in the case known as Russiagate. The conviction results from the disclosure of personal data of protesters to the Russian embassy.

The personal data of participants was shared with the Russian diplomatic representation following a protest held by dissidents in Lisbon. The protesters demanded the release of Russian political opponent Alexey Navalny.

The case raises questions about the protection of personal data and the freedom of expression and assembly in Portuguese territory. The city council was deemed responsible for providing information that allowed the identification of participants in the protest against Vladimir Putin's regime.

This court decision establishes an important precedent regarding the handling of data from citizens participating in protest actions with an international component. The municipality of Lisbon was thus condemned to compensate for the breach of privacy.

Initiatives by companies, institutions and social organizations have been fundamental to expanding the number of donors and encouraging voluntary and recurring donation, considered essential for supplying blood banks and caring for patients in surgeries, transplants and emergencies.
