Apple launches iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable

Jornal Económico10 September 2026 at 11:22

Apple launched on Wednesday (September 9) the iPhone Duo, its first foldable device, representing one of the biggest changes in the company's main product since its debut in 2007. The model features a 7.6-inch internal screen, 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and promises to solve hinge durability and screen crease issues that affect competitors like Samsung, Google, and Huawei, which entered this segment in 2019.

The announcement was Apple's first major conference under the command of John Ternus, who took the position of CEO on September 1, after 15 years of Tim Cook at the helm of the company. Ternus previously led the hardware engineering division and participated in the development of products such as iPad, Mac, and AirPods.

The starting price of the iPhone Duo is $1,999 (1,720 euros), reaching 31,000 reals (5,214 euros) for the 2 TB version in Brazil. The device will be available to Brazilian consumers starting October 23, with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, titanium frame, IP68 resistance, two 48 MP rear cameras, and Apple Pencil compatibility.

Apple also presented the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max line, with prices starting at $1,199 in the United States and a focus on artificial intelligence. The new A20 Pro chip features a 16-core Neural Engine for AI processing, and the new Siri AI will be able to understand the user's personal context and perform actions within apps. The Pro models have three 48 MP sensors with variable aperture and optical zoom up to 8x, in addition to a battery with up to 45 hours of video playback.

Months after launch, Anthropic makes Mythos available to the European Union

Anthropic has made its Mythos AI model, specialised in cybersecurity, available to the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), months after its launch in April, following months of negotiations with Brussels. Access was made possible after the European Commission pressured the company. Around 40 entities are participating in the Glasswing Project, including Apple, Google, Microsoft and Nvidia. However, the United Kingdom was left out, with the AI Security Institute (AISI) not receiving access to test the model before its launch, which has raised concerns in the British government, which fears that US technology companies are adopting an increasingly restrictive stance towards foreign institutions.

Professional Fact-Checking on Social Media Is in Crisis in Latin America

Experts warn that Meta's decision to replace professional fact-checking with the Community Notes system on its social media platform in Latin America may harm the quality of public debate in a region that has been leaning towards the far right. The new system, inspired by the X (formerly Twitter) model, was rejected by Brazil due to government regulations. Alejandro Martín del Campo, from the Media Observatory of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, warned that, given Meta's dominance in social media consumption in the region, the absence of professional verification may accelerate the spread of misinformation. According to data from LatamChequea, 14 agencies in Latin America participate in Meta's verification program.

Apple creates feature to use the same number on two iPhones

Apple announced that iOS 27 will bring a new feature called "iPhone Handoff," which will allow users to use the same phone number on two different iPhones, switching between devices seamlessly. The feature allows setting one iPhone as primary and another as secondary, making the number follow the device the user chooses to use at that moment without needing to redo transfer processes. The novelty gains relevance especially now that Apple is expanding its iPhone family with different formats.
