An engineer from Anthropic, Jacob Coxon, resigned from the company this week and took to social media X to accuse both Anthropic and rival OpenAI of acting irresponsibly in the development of artificial intelligence. His posts, which have already been viewed over 70 million times, generated a wave of concern on social media about the accelerated pace of this technology.
According to CNBC, Coxon stated that companies are "playing with our lives" and that the people developing this technology believe it can "kill us all by the end of the decade." The engineer warned that soon there will be "superhuman systems capable of invading anything, revolutionizing any field overnight, and conquering real power and resources."
The engineer noted that both Anthropic and OpenAI are aware of these dangers but continue to invest in the technology and are in a race to complete their initial public offerings. Coxon emphasized that "none of these companies are acting responsibly" and that they are "running directly toward a superintelligence capable of self-improvement."
Jacob Coxon's comments received support from Evan Hubinger, leader of the alignment team at Anthropic, who stated he believes AI can effectively kill all humans, estimating a probability greater than 10% in the next decade. These statements reflect a long-standing debate in Silicon Valley about the responsibility of developing and controlling artificial intelligence safely.
