The Ministry of Education will proceed with the merger of the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education, integrating 5th and 6th grade students into 1st cycle schools. This reorganization is part of a measure that will enter large-scale testing in the 2027/28 school year.
With this change, 1st cycle teachers, who currently have a heavier teaching load, will see their number of teaching hours reduced. Teachers who teach up to the 4th grade will also be affected by this change in the distribution of teaching hours.
The ministry justifies this measure with the need to optimize resources and create better learning conditions for students. The integration of the two cycles also aims to create a smoother transition between the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education.
As a novelty, a monthly monitoring system will be implemented that will allow tracking, every month, how many students are without classes. This information aims to ensure more rigorous monitoring of school attendance and identify any failures in the organization of teaching.
