'Will the day's decision stand?': Crisis 'creates chaos,' tests limits, and weakens STF's image, warn experts

The dispute between Supreme Court Justices André Mendonça and Flavio Dino, who within less than 24 hours removed and reinstated Andrei Rodrigues as head of the Federal Police, contributes to worsening the Court's crisis and weakens the institution's image, according to experts. The conflict created a scenario of uncertainty that justified the STF president's, Edson Fachin's, decision to suspend both rulings on Wednesday.

In the assessment of Wallace Corbo, professor of Constitutional Law at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), the sequence of rulings—which also includes that of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered an investigation against Mendonça—tested the Court's limits. According to Corbo, the situation "creates institutional chaos," raising the question of which ruling effectively prevails.

Iran rejects links with Houthi rebels after US accusations

Iran rejected the United States' accusations that Yemen's Houthi rebels are affiliated with Tehran, arguing that the Ansarullah movement is an "independent Yemeni actor" that makes its own decisions and receives no orders from anyone. The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, stated that "Marco Rubio's lies cannot replace facts" and criticized the US military interventions and hegemonic policies in the region. This position comes after the US secretary of state stated that the Houthis are "agents and representatives of Iranians" and that "behind part of this is Iran's hand". The US embassy in Yemen reiterated that the Houthis' actions had "widely documented" support from Iran, while forces of the Saudi-led coalition reported missile and drone attacks by the rebels against three Saudi locations.
