The disputes over competences between the state administration and the autonomous administration continue in Spain. The State now contradicts the positions of the Canary Islands and assigns the responsibility for the triage of migrant minors to the regional government.
The Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, defended this position in a statement on Wednesday. According to him, the competence over the triage of migrant minors corresponds to the autonomous executive.
The triage is the first process of identification and evaluation when a person arrives at the border. Pestana explained that the State already manages the Temporary Attention Centers for Foreigners (CATE).
Furthermore, the delegate argued that the European regulation establishes that this procedure must be carried out by an authority independent from whoever manages the CATE.
