Cinema in Bangu, Once One of the Most Modern in Rio, Resorted to Improvisation to Deal With the Neighborhood's Heat at Its Inauguration

Cine Matilde, inaugurated on March 15, 1963, on Avenida Ministro Ary Franco, in Bangu, West Zone of Rio, was one of the most modern cinemas of the era, with 1,360 upholstered seats and an oval screen for better visibility. Conceived by merchant Antônio Gama da Silva in honor of his wife, the venue featured a powerful central air conditioning system, but the electrical grid on the avenue could not handle the demand. To deal with the intense heat of the neighborhood, the solution was to improvise with fans and stuff the ventilation tubes with ice, in addition to subsequently requesting an increase in electrical capacity.
