An 'African ridge' approaches Portugal that will leave full July temperatures for four days

Meteored Portugal10 September 2026 at 07:05

A very hot air mass will reinforce temperatures in mainland Portugal over the coming days. Between Saturday and Tuesday, various regions may register maximums between 35 and 38°C, values well above the usual for this time of year. The phenomenon is described as an "African ridge" that will help transport very hot air to Portugal.

After the passage of a cold front that brought a temporary change in the weather, the heat is preparing to return in force. The recovery of temperatures will be progressive during the final stretch of the week, but will gain special expression from Saturday, the 12th.

According to the ECMWF model maps, a very hot air mass should settle over the Iberian Peninsula, favoured by the expansion of an anticyclonic ridge that will allow the transport of hot air from lower latitudes. The result will be a new episode of high temperatures, with characteristics that will remind of mid-summer in various parts of the country, despite it already being September.
