The European Court of Auditors warned that the REPowerEU plan, intended to reduce European dependence on fossil fuels, needs to "recharge its batteries" to achieve the objectives that were set. The court considers that current funding is insufficient to meet the established targets.
Of the 300 billion euros available for the Recovery and Resilience Plans, European Union countries dedicated only 54.3 billion euros to REPowerEU, representing a relatively small fraction of the total available.
REPowerEU was created as a response to the energy crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with the aim of diversifying energy sources and accelerating the transition to renewable energy on the European continent.
The ECA's warning comes at a time when Europe continues to face significant challenges regarding energy security and dependence on fossil fuel imports, particularly from third countries.
