The Congress of Deputies voted on Thursday on a bill to grant Spanish nationality to Saharawis born under Spanish administration. The Popular Party did not reject this measure, at a time of great political debate.
The parliamentary debate took place amid the migratory crisis in Ceuta, after the migratory avalanche experienced in the summer. The vote also came in the same week that the Supreme Court suspended the electoral effects of the so-called "grandchildren's law," a provision of the democratic memory law.
The "grandchildren's law" also aims to grant Spanish nationality to descendants of exiles from the Civil War and the dictatorship, many of whom moved to Latin American countries. This law has generated controversy and legal questions about its effects.
