The Spanish Government wants to impose new green requirements for data centers, with the aim of limiting the large number of accumulated projects and ensuring that only the most sustainable ones proceed. The Executive is preparing a royal decree with more stringent conditions on electricity consumption.
One of the main measures will be the implementation of hourly monitoring of electricity consumption in data centers, to ensure that they use energy from renewable sources. This exhaustive monitoring will be maintained for at least a decade.
The initiative arises in response to the significant increase in data center projects in Spanish territory, which have generated environmental and energy consumption concerns. With these new rules, the Government intends to ensure that the sector contributes to the country's sustainability objectives.
