Two suspects involved in the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio will be extradited to the United States. The Attorney General's Office announced on Wednesday that former police officer Daniel Salcedo and former intelligence agent identified as R.P.H.R. are part of the investigation into the masterminds of the crime.
Villavicencio was shot dead by a Colombian hitman after leaving a campaign rally in Quito, one week before the early elections of August 2023. The assassination caused international outrage and led to the arrest of several suspects.
Five people have already been sentenced to up to 34 years in prison for the crime. In pre-trial testimony, R.P.H.R. detailed the surveillance he carried out on the presidential candidate.
