Elderly woman throws coins into aircraft engine in Shanghai "to ask for luck" and causes hours of delay

Funchal Notícias10 September 2026 at 04:56

An 80-year-old passenger delayed a China Southern Airlines flight by nearly five hours on Tuesday after throwing nine coins into the turbine of an aircraft at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China. The incident occurred during boarding onto the plane.

The elderly woman stated that the gesture was a superstitious tradition to "ask for safety" on the journey. The act forced airport authorities to perform a complete inspection of the aircraft's engine before the flight could proceed.

China Southern Airlines has not officially commented on the case regarding the passenger. No information has been released about any potential legal consequences or disciplinary measures taken against the elderly woman following the incident.
