On September 9, 1973, Funchal gained a new milestone in public health with the inauguration of the Hospital Distrital do Funchal. This hospital unit became a reference in the provision of health care in the Madeira region over more than half a century. Over the years, the hospital was successively known by different names, including Hospital da Cruz de Carvalho and Hospital Novo. More recently, in 2009, it was renamed Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, remaining a fundamental institution for the Madeiran population.
