The researcher José Chen-Xu is the first author of a study published in the scientific journal The Lancet, which analyzes the response capacity of Portuguese cities facing climate change.
According to the warning issued by José Chen-Xu, the impacts of climate change continue to grow at a faster pace than the response capacity of Portuguese cities. This means that the adaptation efforts implemented so far are insufficient to keep up with the speed of ongoing environmental changes.
The study suggests that it is necessary to significantly accelerate the progress of urban adaptation measures, particularly regarding the preservation and planting of trees, which play a crucial role in thermal regulation and the well-being of populations in urban areas.
