UN nuclear agency accuses Iran of violating nuclear non-proliferation obligation

cbn9 September 2026 at 20:21

The International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN body that regulates the use of nuclear energy worldwide, accused Iran of violating its nuclear non-proliferation obligations and reported the country to the UN Security Council. The resolution was passed by 35 countries, with 23 votes in favor, three against and eight abstentions. Iran is a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In parallel, Iran announced on Wednesday that it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, after the United States sank five Iranian oil tankers. According to the article, this was the largest declared wave of reciprocal attacks on maritime navigation by both sides since the beginning of the war, which has lasted six months.

Iran also claimed it fired ballistic missiles at a base used by US forces in Jordan. The hostilities occurred one day after an escalation in fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, an armed group supported by Iran in the region.

Iran extends restricted navigation area beyond the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has expanded its restricted navigation zone beyond the Strait of Hormuz, in an escalation of maritime tensions in the region. The entry into force of a new United States military doctrine triggered a wave of attacks and retaliations against commercial and military ships, as well as an attack on an American base in Jordan. This situation led to the expansion of the Iranian maritime blockade, significantly increasing the risks for international traffic in the area.
