Overmars leaves football on doctor's orders

Dia de Jogo — jornal desportivo9 September 2026 at 19:51

Marc Overmars, the former Dutch winger who represented clubs such as Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, announced his retirement from football for health reasons. The decision came after a warning from his doctors, who recommended that he step away from professional activity.

Overmars, who was only 27 years old when he hung up his boots in 2008 due to heart problems, was once again facing health-related issues. This is not the first time that medical problems have forced the former player to change his professional plans.

In recent years, Overmars had devoted himself to the role of sporting director at Ajax, the club where he became a legend as a player. However, his health became a concern again, leading to his definitive departure from the world of football.

The decision marks the end of a remarkable career, marked both by sporting successes and by the health challenges that accompanied the former winger throughout his life.

The Brazilian, who scored a goal in the match, refused to comment on the subject, stating that he only talks about Barcelona. His absence from the list of 30 finalists was considered one of the biggest surprises of the award. Raphinha had excellent performance in the 2025/26 season, with 21 goals and seven assists in 33 games, being one of the main reasons for the La Liga title. Only three Brazilians appeared among the finalists: Gabriel Magalhães, Marquinhos and Vini Jr.
