Brazilian government releases 1.1 billion euros to subsidize fuels

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 19:08

The Brazilian government released 1.1 billion euros to subsidize fuels. This decision is part of an economic support program for the country's energy sector.

Most of the resources, 5.6 billion reais (around 946 million euros), will be destined for the economic subsidy of the production and importation of road-use diesel. This amount represents the largest portion of the total budget released.

The program aims to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices on consumers and businesses. Road-use diesel is a fundamental input for the transportation of goods and passengers in Brazil.

The measure comes in a context of inflationary pressure and high international oil prices, which have been affecting the Brazilian economy and the cost of living of the population.

Cost of fuel subsidy will be greater than that of the subvention

Brazil's economic team finalized calculations for the gasoline and diesel subsidy, which will be implemented by decree signed by President Lula. The cost is expected to exceed initial estimates because oil prices have risen back toward $100 per barrel, contrary to expectations. The amount will be higher than the subsidy that was in the provisional measure that expired on Wednesday.
