Porto and Norte Local Accommodation Association advocates for common EU rules on LA

dnoticias.pt9 September 2026 at 19:26

The Porto and Norte Local Accommodation Association today defended that it is important for the European Union to discuss and define common criteria for short-term local accommodation, based on data and territorial specificities. The association considers that this discussion is fundamental to harmonize rules throughout the European bloc.

The European Commission released today a proposal to create common rules that would allow member states and local authorities to regulate short-term accommodation, such as platforms like Airbnb, in areas that are under housing pressure.

This proposal aims to establish criteria that help countries and municipalities better manage the impact of local accommodation on their communities, especially in urban areas where pressure on the housing market is more intense.

The position of the Portuguese association comes in response to this European initiative, showing that the sector recognizes the need for regulation but argues that any regulatory framework must take into account the particularities of each territory and be based on concrete data.
