Russia reported this Wednesday that a Ukrainian drone hit a region in the Urals, 3,000 kilometres from the border with Ukraine, in an extremely rare long-range attack that caused a fire at an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy. The governor of the autonomous territory of Yamalia-Nenetsia, Dmitri Artyukov, confirmed that the attack was repelled and that the falling debris caused the fire, asking inhabitants to remain calm.
The attack caused no deaths or injuries. Artyukov assured that the situation is under control. The city of Novy Urengoy was built in the 1970s after the discovery of the Urengoy Field, an important natural gas deposit.
The attack was claimed by the Fire Point group, described as one of the main architects of deep strikes against Russia. A blogger and former advisor to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Serguei Sternenlo, estimated that, by traveling a trajectory of 3,000 km from the border with Ukraine, this drone set a new range record.
During the past months, Ukraine and Russia have intensified long-range fire attacks against industrial, military, and logistics facilities. This is not the first time Ukraine has attacked distant Russian regions, having launched drones against regions such as Bashkortostan and Chuvashia in late July.
