The Local Health Unit of Central Alentejo clarified that the resumption of treatments at the Évora Radiotherapy Unit depends on the completion of technical tests and obtaining mandatory licenses. The unit has been temporarily closed since June 1st to allow for the comprehensive renewal and technological modernization of the equipment, which was previously planned and announced in April.
The intervention is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and represents an investment of approximately four million euros, covering the replacement of the two linear accelerators, as well as installation work, testing, validation and licensing by the Health Regulatory Authority. The new accelerators are already installed, but the resumption of activity is subject to verification of all clinical safety conditions.
Treatments are being referred to units in Santarém, Faro or Lisbon, with ULSAC ensuring the necessary logistical support and transport for patients' travel. The first consultation, initial evaluation and clinical follow-up continue to take place in Évora, and the institution maintains monitoring of each patient's journey and coordination between the teams involved.
The Left Bloc expressed concern about the affected oncology patients and revealed that ULSAC launched a tender in February for a new concession of the unit, won by the Spanish company Altrys Portugal. According to the BE, the tender was annulled by the Court of Auditors, with the political structure demanding that ULSAC promote the reopening of the unit and independently fulfill its responsibilities in providing radiotherapy care.
