Referees who failed physical tests to officiate Benfica and FC Porto matches

Maisfutebol9 September 2026 at 17:13

Referees who failed physical tests continue to officiate matches of the top teams in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. José Bessa and João Gonçalves are two of those referees who failed the mandatory physical tests but continue to be active nonetheless.

José Bessa is the chosen referee to officiate the FC Porto match in Rio Maior. In turn, João Gonçalves will referee the Benfica match at the Estádio da Luz. Both matches involve the two biggest Portuguese clubs.

The situation raises questions about the selection and maintenance criteria for referees in active duty, given that physical tests are fundamental requirements to ensure the physical competence of game officials during matches.
