The former minister of Education João Costa assumed on Wednesday the responsibility for Portugal's results in the PISA report, stating that "this is what is expected from someone in government positions". Costa publicly acknowledged the need to answer for the educational data presented in the international study.
However, the former government official noted that the PISA results also reflect global trends that go beyond the national sphere. Costa highlighted that several countries face similar challenges regarding student performance measured by this report.
PISA is an international study that evaluates the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students in areas such as reading, mathematics, and sciences. Portugal has participated in this OECD programme, allowing comparisons with other countries and monitoring the evolution of the Portuguese education system over time.
