Very hot drinks linked to oesophageal cancer, say researchers

Euronews Portugal9 September 2026 at 16:00

Researchers from around the world conducted the largest study ever carried out on the relationship between the consumption of very hot drinks and oesophageal cancer. The study confirmed a clear association between the consumption of drinks at high temperatures and the development of this type of cancer.

The research analysed data from thousands of participants and demonstrated that the risk of oesophageal cancer significantly increases in people who regularly consume very hot drinks, such as coffee or tea, compared to those who consume these drinks at lower temperatures.

This study reinforces what had already been suggested by previous research, but now provides more robust evidence on the danger of consuming drinks at very high temperatures for oesophageal health.

Experts recommend that the population avoid consuming very hot drinks, allowing them to reach a safer temperature before drinking, as a prevention measure against oesophageal cancer.

The Curiosity rover breaks its altitude record on Mars and captures an unprecedented panoramic image

NASA's Curiosity rover reached a historic milestone by reaching one kilometer in altitude on Mars on August 26, 2026, during its ascent of Mount Sharp from Gale Crater, summarizing fourteen years of exploration that began in 2014. This achievement allows scientists to explore new rock layers and reconstruct in greater detail the complex environmental and climatic history of Mars. During the ascent, Curiosity crossed various types of terrain, including slopes, loose sand, fractured rocks, and challenging surfaces that tested its capabilities. The milestone represents not a continuous vertical climb, but rather a comparison of the rover's current altitude relative to Gale Crater.
