In the Azores, there are more than 3,140 properties with asbestos roofing, which may pose a risk to public health. Most of these buildings, almost 90%, are privately owned, according to data from the Regional Government. The Azorean executive revealed this information in response to a requisition submitted in the Azorean parliament by the Left Bloc. The party questioned the executive about the removal of asbestos in public buildings. Asbestos, when degraded or manipulated, can release dangerous fibers for human health, causing serious respiratory diseases.
