The Municipality of Torres Vedras announced yesterday the beginning of a new phase of work to assess and stabilise the Castle Slope of Torres Vedras, following episodes of severe instability caused by storms that affected the municipality at the beginning of the year. The local authority has been developing a set of technical measures with the support of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering and specialists in geology and geotechnical engineering, aiming to guarantee the safety of the territory and prepare an integrated intervention.
As part of this operation, the topographic, architectural and three-dimensional surveys of the slope are now beginning, using laser scanning technology. This tool will allow the obtaining of a rigorous record of the terrain characteristics, existing structures and the current configuration of the hill. The work follows geotechnical drilling already carried out and will be decisive for the development of consolidation and stabilisation projects, as well as for the landscape enhancement of Morro do Castelo and the safeguarding of the built heritage.
The operation is expected to last two months. During this period, the presence of technical teams and specialised equipment may cause occasional restrictions to traffic and use of public space, especially in the areas of the Historic Centre near the walls. The local authority assures that it will seek to minimise impacts and guarantee appropriate signage, thanking residents and users of the town centre for their understanding.
This action represents another stage in the ongoing work that the Municipality of Torres Vedras has been developing to reinforce safety conditions and promote the enhancement of the historical, urban and landscape heritage associated with the Castle of Torres Vedras.
