The Academic Federation of University Sports (FADU) presented a proposal for the creation of an annual fund of 50 euros per student, intended to finance university sports in Portuguese higher education. The objective is to guarantee stable and predictable funding for higher education institutions.
This fund aims to support various areas of university sports, including the construction and maintenance of sports facilities, the promotion of physical activity among students, the financing of sports competitions and support for student associations in the sports domain.
The FADU proposal was developed with the concern of not implying an increase in tuition fees for students. Thus, the funding would be ensured through an alternative source, seeking to combine the valorization of university sports with the accessibility of higher education.
The initiative comes in a context where many Portuguese universities face difficulties in maintaining and developing their sports facilities, as well as in promoting regular physical activities among students. FADU defends that this fund would allow these needs to be addressed in a structured and continuous manner.
