German Chancellor Friedrich Merz canceled a planned phone call with United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday (9). The reason for the cancellation was not disclosed by a spokesperson for Merz, who only stated that it was not due to scheduling conflicts.
The cancellation occurred hours after Trump had publicly celebrated, on his Truth Social platform, the victory of the German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in a regional election. In the post, Trump used the abbreviation MGGA, an adaptation of his characteristic slogan "Make Germany Great Again."
In the message, Trump stated that the German populist party had a memorable night and criticized Germany's immigration rules, saying the country finally got tired of them. The American president added that the AfD is rising and will no longer tolerate these policies. The France-Presse news agency (AFP) reported the story.
