The proposal for the review of the Municipal Master Plan of Vila Real de Santo António will enter the public discussion phase, after a process that has been ongoing for several years. The current PDM was approved in 1992 and was not revised in 2002 as planned, with several revision procedures having been initiated since 2006 without being concluded. The current process was reopened in 2020, with the objective of updating the main territorial planning instrument of the municipality.
The public discussion will last 30 working days and will begin five days after the publication of the notice in the Official Gazette. During this period, residents, property owners, companies, institutions, and other interested parties will be able to consult the proposal and submit contributions. After the contributions received have been analyzed, the final proposal will be prepared, which will be submitted for approval by the Municipal Assembly and possible ratification by the Council of Ministers.
The new PDM places housing, economic diversification, tourism, mobility, and urban qualification among the main axes of territorial strategy. In the city of Vila Real de Santo António, an area of approximately 11 hectares is planned for housing at controlled costs, accessibility, green spaces, and economic and socio-cultural activities. Two tourist areas of approximately 20 hectares and approximately five hectares for new economic activities in the northern area of the city are also planned.
In Vila Nova de Cacela, the proposal includes two areas for housing at controlled costs and a zone for economic activities of more than six hectares, in addition to new parking solutions near Lota and Ribeira do Álamo beaches and the creation of rural settlements in the area of Corte António Martins. In Monte Gordo, new road connections are planned to improve accessibility and an area for the installation of a new GNR territorial post. The plan also includes environmental qualification measures with green spaces using native species adapted to water scarcity.
