Benfica's board does not exclude the possibility of acquiring the 16.38% stake held by José António dos Santos, known as the Rei dos Frangos, in the club's SAD. The issue gained strong prominence behind the scenes at the club after the official blocking of the sale of that batch of 3,767,400 shares to the US fund Entrepreneur Equity Partners.
The deal with the American group intended to sell that position for a value hovering around 12 euros per share. However, Benfica's SAD halted the transaction based on the club's statutes, thus preventing the entry of the fund linked to businessman Tim Leiweke, owner of the Italian club Venezia, into Benfica's corporate capital.
Regarding the possible internal transaction, vice-president and financial administrator Nuno Catarino openly addressed the topic, clarifying the conditions required by the board for a possible acquisition. According to his statements, the position of shareholder José António dos Santos includes a valuation that the board respects, although the conversation appears to remain incomplete in the article.
