The Basque Government granted third-degree prison status to former ETA leader Henri Parot, who is expected to be released from prison in the coming days. Parot had been imprisoned since 1990, serving an accumulated sentence of 40 years in prison.
The decision was applied at the Guipuzcoan prison of Zubieta, where Parot was held. With the granting of third-degree status, the former leader of the armed organization will be able to leave the prison facility soon.
Henri Parot was one of the most relevant leaders of ETA during the 1980s and 1990s. His long sentence results from multiple convictions related to terrorist activities carried out by the Basque separatist organization.
This measure by the Basque Government falls within the framework of the region's penitentiary policy, which allows progression to greater freedom regimes for prisoners serving long sentences, through periodic assessments of their behavior.
